Tuesday July 15, 2014 WEBSITE | FORWARD TO A FRIEND | SHARE ON:

I hope you had a great Fourth of July holiday and are having a wonderful summer. Our office has been working around the clock in response to the crisis at the Phoenix VA. In recent months, we have brought together organizations throughout the community to ensure veterans get the care they need. We will continue working with government and community partners to find ways to better serve our veterans and will be sure to keep you updated on what we are doing.

This newsletter is one way for us to bring the work we do to you, and we hope you take the time to read it. Be sure you stay connected through my Facebook and Twitteraccounts, and let us know how we can be of service!

Sincerely,
Kyrsten

Getting Arizona Veterans the Care They Need

This month, we co-hosted the Veterans First: Healthcare, Benefits and Resources Clinic. This day-long event was a collaboration between our office, the office of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, the Phoenix VA, and a number of veteran-serving organizations to help veterans in a variety of ways.

Approximately 400 veterans attended, and more than 20 veteran-serving organizations participated and provided veterans with resources and information about the services they provide.  This event was a great example of the good that results when our community focuses on putting veterans first to help meet their needs. Although progress is being made, the VA and our community have more work to do to meet our commitment to veterans. We will continue working until all of our veterans receive the quality care they've earned and deserve.

Preventing Veteran Suicide

This month, we joined Howard and Jean Somers in speaking at a House Veterans Affairs Committee hearing about preventing veteran suicide and improving access to mental health services at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Somers are the parents of Arizona Congressional District 9 resident and Army veteran, Daniel Somers, who committed suicide on June 10, 2013 after failing to receive adequate care from the Phoenix VA. During the moving testimony, they outlined several ways the VA can better care for veterans seeking treatment.

We are working with the Somers to improve the accessibility and quality of mental health services available to veterans. Click here to learn more about our efforts.

Protecting Medicare for Arizona Seniors

We recently received the "Medicare Leadership Award" from the Healthcare Leadership Council for our work to protect Medicare for Arizona Seniors.

This award recognizes members of Congress who have brought awareness to the Part C & D program and have been advocates for further strengthening the Medicare program. The Coalition for Medicare Choices also recognized our bipartisan work to protect Medicare Advantage, stating that seniors "know how important it is to have champions of Medicare Advantage in the future to continue to protect its members."

We are committed to protecting Medicare for Arizona seniors and to supporting reasonable solutions that strengthen this important program.

Our Constituent Services and Casework Team
is ready to help you!

If you are having a problem with a federal agency and have not been able to resolve it on your own, we are available to help you. We have a team of talented caseworkers who will do their absolute best to try to resolve any issue you may be having with a federal agency.

Here are some recent examples of how we've been able to help our constituents:
  • We worked with the IRS and Social Security Administration to remove a constituent’s "deceased" indicator on his records, allowing him to receive his tax return. He had tried several times to get this done to no avail. Shortly after he called us for help, we were able to work with the two agencies to fix it. Now that it’s fixed, he’s received his tax refunds.
  • We helped a constituent receive her Medicare awards notice and Medicare card. Her application was erroneously put on hold, and when she inquired about it they told her it would take 90 days to review and process her application. Within a week of her calling our office for help and us making an inquiry, it was approved.
If you need help working with a federal agency, please contact us. Some of the agencies we can help with include: * Social Security * Medicare * Medicaid * Veterans Benefits * Student Loans * IRS * Social Security Disability Insurance * Immigration * Visa * Passports *
