Sinema, Bost Introduce Bill to Reform VA Hiring

Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09) today introduced bipartisan legislation to reform hiring for human resources positions at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities. The VA Hospitals Establishing Leadership Performance (HELP) Act will empower the VA to hire talented, committed employees and to ensure those employees are meeting the high performance standard veterans deserve.

Congressman Mike Bost (IL-12) joined Congresswoman Sinema to offer the legislation.

“Caring for our veterans is one of our most important obligations,” said Congresswoman Sinema.“Our bill helps bring some needed accountability to the VA to ensure we attract and retain employees with the passion, talent, and commitment necessary to serve our veteransI am proud to work across the aisle with Congressman Bost to improve care for the brave men and women who have worn the uniform.”

“Our heroes deserve to receive the best care possible when they return from their service,” said Congressman Bost.  After reports surfaced of mismanagement and veterans receiving poor treatment at VA hospitals, I went to work with Rep. Sinema on the bipartisan VA HELP Act.  Our bill ensures VA hospitals hire to the highest possible standard to make certain our heroes get the best quality care.”

The VA HELP Act instructs the VA to establish qualifications for each human resource position within the VHA and standardize performance metrics similar to the private sector. HR departments at the VA currently have no such requirements.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report on how current flaws within VA’s Human Resources operations hamper VA’s ability to effectively serve our veterans.
