Sinema Helps Pass Bill to Support AZ Military Bases, Honor Our Commitment to Veterans

Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09) worked across the aisle this week to provide critical resources for Luke Air Force Base and improve health care for Arizona veterans. Sinema helped pass H.R. 5895, which funds the construction and operations of military bases, including Luke Air Force Base in Glendale. The bill also funds mental health and suicide prevention programs for veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs, among other provisions.

Congresswoman Sinema also helped secure provisions in the bill to block a pay raise for members of Congress and prepare the VA to care for the next generation of veterans.

“This bill focuses on my highest priorities: keeping Arizonans safe and honoring our commitment to veterans,” said Congresswoman Sinema. “We worked across the aisle to help provide the VA with the resources to improve care for our veterans and ensure that Luke Air Force Base can continue its critical national security mission.”

Among other provisions, the bill includes:

  • $23 million for construction of an F-35 maintenance facility at Luke AFB;
  • $17 million to support F-35 squadron operation at Luke AFB;
  • $8.6 billion for mental health and suicide prevention programs;
  • $300 million for construction of VA facilities; and
  • $348 million for opioid treatment and prevention programs.
