Sinema Statement on Partisan Tax Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-09) voted against today’s tax bill. She released the following statement after the vote:

“A broken Congress failed again to deliver for hardworking Arizonans. Arizonans want fiscally responsible tax reform that gives families a chance to get ahead. They are sick and tired of the backroom deals and partisan games that continue to put the American dream out of reach for too many.

“This bill increases the $20 trillion debt by an additional $1.456 trillion, forces cuts to Medicare, and crowds out business lending and growth. In the long run, it raises taxes on over half of all taxpayers and doesn’t simplify the tax code for businesses. That does not create jobs or help middle-class families build better lives.

“Rushing through a bill for short-term political gain does not serve Arizona or the American people. When President Reagan and a Democratic Congress passed tax reform in the ‘80s, it took two years and bipartisan cooperation. It was hard work, and it was worth it. Americans deserve that type of leadership.

“I've repeatedly called for an open, bipartisan process because bipartisan legislation stands the test of time. I’m ready to fix the problems and mistakes that will inevitably become clear as we learn more about the harmful consequences of this rushed and partisan tax bill.”
