April Newsletter

This month, we co-hosted the first Arizona Education Summit for Servicemembers and Student Veterans where we connected student veterans with education benefits, career planning, and community resources.

All returning servicemembers deserve to come home to a community that will help them lead successful, healthy civilian lives.  They sacrificed to protect our country, and when they return home, it is our duty to ensure they get the care and services they need to achieve the American Dream.

It is a privilege to serve the residents of Arizona's Ninth District. If there is an issue that matters to you, please let us know by clicking this link or calling our Phoenix office: 602-956-2285. Be sure to stay connected through our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and let us know how we can be of service.

Creating Opportunity for Arizona Families

To grow a global workforce, we must ensure Arizona students have the skills and knowledge they need for the jobs of the future. This month, we introduced bipartisan legislation improving federally mandated testing requirements to allow teachers to focus on learning, creativity, and critical thinking – the skills students need to succeed.

We also introduced the Child and Dependent Care FSA Enhancement Act to expand child and dependent care flexible spending accounts (FSAs) for Arizona families. The rising cost of care for children and elderly parents leaves too many Arizona families struggling to make ends meet. Increasing the amount of money Arizonans can put into a tax-preferred FSA account helps stretch dollars further and allows families to better plan for the future.

We’ve heard from companies throughout Arizona that burdensome regulations continue to stifle their ability to grow and succeed. We introduced the Fostering Innovation Act to cut red tape and allow innovative companies to spend valuable resources on product research and development instead of costly and unnecessary external audits.

Fighting for Arizona Veterans

This month, we introduced legislation with Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to establish a national strategy to defeat ISIS. Our bill directs the Department of State and the Department of Defense to formally develop a consistent and long-term strategy to destroy ISIS and its known affiliates. The bill improves our government’s approach to fighting terrorism and ensures our families and communities are safe.

We continued our work with Dr. Phil Roe, House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman, to improve care at the Phoenix VA. We met with Phoenix VA leadership and program directors for updates on their progress and plans to continue improving care. There have been modest improvements, but we have a lot of work left to do to hold the VA accountable and ensure all Arizona veterans receive the very best care.

Arizona veterans deserve access to timely, quality care – whether at the VA or from community providers. This month, we passed legislation to continue the Veterans Choice Program and ensure veterans can receive care at home in our communities.

Fixing a Broken Washington

Hardworking Arizonans know if they don’t do their jobs, they won’t get paid. The same should be true for members of Congress. That’s why this month we introduced the No Budget No Pay Act to hold Congress accountable if they fail to pass a budget.

A woman, her family, and her doctor should make important health decisions – not Washington politicians. We’ll continue working to fight back against attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and limit access to care for Arizona women and families.

We continued our work with Planned Parenthood to ensure all Arizona women and families have access to safe, affordable health care.
