Countering Terrorist Financing

Dear Friend,

As Americans, we all know the threat international terrorist organizations pose to our safety and security. Protecting Arizona families is more important than ever.

Terrorist organizations around the world rely on illicit funding to procure resources, incite violence, and spread their extremist message. This week, we introduced bipartisan legislation with Congressman Ted Budd of North Carolina to combat terrorist financing. The National Strategy for Combating Terrorist and Other Illicit Financing Act directs the Secretary of the Treasury, in coordination with other federal agencies, to establish a comprehensive strategy to combat the financing of terrorism and related forms of illicit finance.

Our legislation forces the federal government to create a whole-of-government strategy to counter terrorism financing that improves the effectiveness of our efforts and better aligns these efforts with our broader national interests. The bill outlines a framework to analyze current U.S. efforts in combatting illicit financing, improve coordination between international, state, and local law enforcement, and begin a comprehensive discussion on the objectives and priorities associated with preventing terrorist financing. The strategy is intended to enhance detection, deterrence and prosecution, and ultimately strengthen our broader national security goals.

Fighting violent extremism at home and abroad is not a Republican or Democratic issue. Our bipartisan legislation is a start, but there is still more work to do. That's why we will continue working with members of both parties to pass commonsense solutions that keep Americans safe at home and abroad.
