Giving Our Troops a Raise

Dear Friend,

Each fiscal year, Congress authorizes defense spending and sets defense policy for the coming year through a bill called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). On Friday, I joined a bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2018.

This year’s bill includes a bipartisan amendment I offered with Congressman Ted Budd of North Carolina and Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania to cut off funds to the Islamic State of Iraq in the Levant (ISIL). Our amendment requires the U.S. Strategy in Syria to identify the amounts and sources of ISIL financing and to deny this financing as part of the broader U.S. strategy. We’re working every day to defeat the terrorist threat and keep our communities and families safe.

To that end, H.R. 2810 allocates $621.5 billion to fund national security priorities. It makes important investments in programs that ensure our military has the tools it needs to keep us safe. These programs, which include missile defense systems, the Apache helicopter, A-10 Warthog, and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, among others, are important to Arizona’s economy, and the bill also includes funding for Arizona’s military infrastructure, authorizing money for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Fort Huachuca, and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

This bill also prioritizes military families by providing a 2.4% pay increase for our men and women in uniform and by reimbursing military spouses up to $500 for expenses related to licensing or certifications when military families move stations. The bill also includes an amendment we offered with Congressman Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvaniato expand career training opportunities for active-duty military men and women so they can successfully transition to jobs as civilians.

As a member of a military family, I believe that supporting ouractive duty military and veterans is one of the most important obligations we have as Americans. This bipartisan legislation responsibly ensures that America’s men and women in uniform have the tools they need to protect our nation. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 is a commonsense effort that provides needed increases to military funding and servicemember pay for the coming year.
