IMPORTANT UPDATE re: Holding the VA Accountable

Dear Friend,

It’s been more than three years since we learned of the tragedies occurring at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center here in Phoenix. As many as forty veterans lost their lives awaiting VA medical care. Corrupt VA employees falsely reported wait times and kept a secret waiting list, preventing veterans from getting proper care while securing bigger bonuses for themselves. Even after the discovery of these problems, it took more than two years to replace three employees responsible for wrongdoings. This is wrong and unacceptable.

Veterans in Arizona count on the VA health system for quality and timely care. Since the revelations in Phoenix, we’ve worked nonstop to pass legislation that increases accountability at the VA. This week, the House passed a bipartisan bill known as the Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act, a commonsense solution that allows the Secretary of the VA to fire poorly performing employees, increases accountability, and protects whistleblowers who report misconduct. This bipartisan bill empowers good VA employees and provides increased training for supervisors to correct problems as they arise. There is still more to be done, and this practical legislation allows the VA to better serve our veterans.

We will not stop fighting until every veteran has access to the healthcare he or she has earned and deserves. We will continue to reach across the aisle to find reasonable solutions that support Arizona veterans and provide them access to the highest standard of medical care.
