March Monthly Newsletter

This month, we delivered our annual State of the District address to the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, where we unveiled our new Arizona-focused plan to create good-paying jobs, strengthen our economy, and ensure businesses have every chance to succeed.

Our Opportunity for Arizona plan focuses on three areas: competing in the new economy, fostering innovation, and growing a global workforce.

We connected Arizona caregivers with resources and legal information at our Caregiver Education Forum.

We held a roundtable with Arizona business leaders and members of Congress to continue our work ensuring trade policies are good for Arizona.

Creating Opportunity for Arizona Families

We held a Caregiver Education Forum to connect Arizona caregivers with important resources and legal information. Arizona caregivers face overwhelming challenges. We’re working to ensure caregivers have a place to turn for resources and support.

We held an international trade roundtable with local Arizona businesses and organizations. The roundtable was designed to facilitate a conversation on the importance of trade to growing Arizona's economy and creating jobs in our state. We've heard from Arizonans that they oppose outdated trade agreements that put our workers at a disadvantage—and they want the opportunity to compete fairly. Trade is critical to Arizona's economy. We're working to ensure hardworking Arizonans have the opportunity to succeed in the new and emerging economy.

We introduced bipartisan legislation with Arizona Congresswoman Martha McSally to prevent a tax increase on Arizona families and seniors. The Halt Tax Increase on Middle Class and Seniors Act lowers out-of-pocket healthcare costs for Arizona seniors and families. Many Arizonans already feel the burden of high out-of-pocket medical expenses and increasing the tax deduction threshold will only cost them more. Our legislation provides critical relief for middle class families and seniors. We will keep working across the aisle to find bipartisan solutions that lower healthcare costs and expand economic opportunity for all Arizonans.

Fighting for Arizona Veterans

We continued our work to support veterans employment through the passage of the BRAVE Act and the HIRE Vets Act. Veterans make great employees. We’re committed to ensure Arizona businesses and organizations recruit, hire, and retain servicemembers, veterans, and military family members.

We voted for the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2017 (H.R. 1301), bipartisan legislation to fund the Department of Defense and related military programs for the rest of 2017. We're committed to providing our servicemembers with the resources they need to keep our country safe. This bill provides a 2.1 percent pay raise to our troops, funds the Apache helicopter and Joint Strike Fighter, and prevents the retirement of the A-10 "Warthog" aircraft, all of which are critical to our country's security and Arizona's economy. Our bipartisan bill with Congressman Ted Yoho (FL-03) to help Arizona veterans navigate the VA passed the House. The WINGMAN Act gives congressional staff the necessary tools to solve constituents' VA claims quickly and effectively. Our legislation removes the unnecessary roadblocks that prevent congressional staff from directly accessing the files they already have permission to possess.

We are honored to have earned Bipartisan Policy Center's Legislative Action Award for our bipartisan commitment to getting things done.

We're working across the aisle to "Fix Not Fight" to find solutions and get things done for Arizonans.

Fixing a Broken Washington

We received the Bipartisan Policy Center’s inaugural Legislative Action Award for our work to break through the partisan gridlock and get things done for Arizona. Arizonans are frustrated by the partisan games in Washington. They don't have the time to stop working because they disagree with someone—and neither does Congress. Progress is made when we put aside our differences and work together to solve problems. We’ll continue working across the aisle to solve the real challenges facing our state and our country.

This month, we helped kick off the No Labels 2017 Problem Solver Conference and participated in a panel with fellow No Labels Problem Solvers. We heard from Arizonans and folks across the country that they want leaders who fix not fight. We agree, and will continue working across the aisle to fix a broken Washington and get things done.

We heard from AZ-09 residents at our Kyrsten in Your Community event in Tempe and our Arizona Coffee event in Washington, D.C.. We also served Arizonans at Mobile Office Hours in Ahwatukee and Phoenix. If you need help with a federal agency, please call our office at 602-956-2285 or find a list of upcoming Mobile Office Hours here
