Never Okay

Dear Friend,

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation that holds members of Congress personally responsible for sexual misconduct settlements, requires the Office of Compliance to disclose settlements and claims, and streamlines the harassment reporting process. I voted for this legislation because Arizonans’ tax dollars shouldn't be used to cover up bad behavior.

Sexual harassment and sexual assault are always wrong. Members of Congress who engage in this hurtful behavior do not deserve our trust and should resign. In Washington, the old system allowed inappropriate behavior to be hushed up with taxpayer dollars. I expect more from members of Congress, and I know you do too.

The legislation we passed this month requires all members of Congress, including those who leave office, to repay the Treasury for any taxpayer money spent on sexual misconduct settlements within 90 days. It also protects employees by providing immediate access to a dedicated advocate who can provide legal services and eliminates mandatory counseling and mediation, which allows an employee to proceed to an investigation or to file in federal court.

My first job was at a domestic violence shelter where I worked with rape and domestic violence survivors. In that job, I learned that sexual harassment, assault and abuse are always about power and the abuse of power. The changes we made this month hold Congress accountable and protect Arizonans’ tax dollars from being used to hush up bad behavior.

I am honored to serve in Congress on behalf of Arizona families like yours. We always appreciate hearing from you on current topics and issues that are important to you.
