Promoting Wildfire Preparedness and Prevention

Dear Friend,

As Arizonans, we are all too familiar with the devastating effects that wildfires have on our communities. These deadly flames burn millions of acres, destroy hundreds of homes and threaten the health and safety of Arizona families and first responders. That’s why two years ago, we introduced and passed bipartisan legislation to integrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into firefighting efforts, which will help firefighters fight wildfires faster, safer, and more effectively.

While we were proud to get those changes signed into law, our work continues. Arizona energy companies see potential for UAS to better maintain rural energy infrastructure, like transmission and distribution lines, ensuring that fire hazards are addressed and that we stop wildfires before they start.

This week, the House passed H.R. 1873, the Electricity Reliability and Forest Protection Act, bipartisan legislation we cosponsored to help keep transmission and distribution lines clear of dry brush and fallen trees that can start a wildfire. Included in the bill was a bipartisan amendment we introduced to ensure the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior are capable partners in using UAS to prevent wildfires.

UAS have the potential to improve efficiency, lower energy costs for Arizona families and businesses, and reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires by ensuring rights-of-way are reliable and properly maintained. We’ll continue working to ensure our electric grid is resilient, reliable, and efficient – and that it works when Arizona families and businesses need it most.

We are honored to serve in Congress on behalf of Arizona families like yours. We always appreciate hearing from you on current topics and issues that are important to you.
