Protecting Children and Families from Identity Theft

Dear Friend,

Earlier this year, I met Jill, a Peoria mom whose daughter’s Social Security number was stolen and used to commit identity fraud. It took seven years to recover her identity and change her social security number. Jill was even forced to change her daughter’s name. It was unacceptable.

That’s when I went to work to help ensure fraud victims or their families don’t have to go through this horrible experience.

ABC15 highlighted our successful efforts to protect kids from identity fraud. Watch here.

I worked across the aisle to pass a bill called the Protecting Children from Identity Theft Act. This bill cracks down on the dangerous form of identity theft used against Jill’s daughter, and directs the Social Security Administration (SSA) to modernize its identity verification system. The president signed our bill into law in May, making it more difficult for scammers to create fake identities with stolen Social Security numbers.

There was more work to do. I pushed the Social Security Administration to learn from Jill’s experience and make changes. As a result of our action, the agency implemented important steps at its offices across the country to make sure families facing child identity theft get help in a timely and effective manner.

I recently sat down with ABC15’s Angie Koehle to discuss these successes on behalf of fraud victims. Watch my interview here.
