re: 60 Minutes Investigation on Opioid Epidemic

Dear Friend,

This week, we joined Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania in introducing the RESTORE Act, bipartisan legislation that ensures the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has the tools they need to crack down on corruption and combat the opioid epidemic.

An investigation by the Washington Post and 60 Minutes revealed that a law quietly passed last year, known as the Ensuring Patient Access and Effective Drug Enforcement Act of 2016, made it significantly harder for DEA to investigate prescription drugs being distributed in suspiciously large quantities. Corrupt doctors and pharmacists take these mass amounts of prescription drugs and peddle them to the black market, which contributed significantly to addiction rates among Americans.

Both parties are to blame for letting this law pass without fully understanding the consequences, and both parties must come together to make it right. The RESTORE Act repeals this 2016 law, giving the DEA the tools they need to take appropriate enforcement action and crack down on systemic overprescription and corruption.

The opioid crisis is tearing apart Arizona families and communities – and the dysfunction and corruption in Washington is only making it worse. We must stop overprescription and hold accountable those who irresponsibly and callously put their profits ahead of our families. We will work to immediately right this wrong, repeal this dangerous law, and work together on solutions that bring an end to this crisis.
