re: DACA

Dear Friend,

This week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Administration will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This is the wrong decision, and it hurts Arizona.

DACA provides a process for undocumented immigrants who entered our country as children to request a deferred action from deportation and authorization for employment for up to three years. To qualify for this program, applicants must meet certain residency requirements, have no felonies, and pass strict background checks.

DACA was designed to specifically target students, military veterans, and other low-risk, upstanding members of our community. The past Administration enacted this policy in part due to Congress’s failure to act on comprehensive immigration reform or a narrower legislative proposal similar to DACA, known as the DREAM Act. Those that were brought to this country at a young age, met DACA requirements, and would have benefitted from the DREAM Act are sometimes known as Dreamers.

Arizona Dreamers have graduated from our schools, are contributing to our economy, and are enlisting in our military to serve our nation. They are contributing members of our community and deserve a chance to become citizens of the only country they have ever known. Arizonans also understand the need for comprehensive, lasting immigration reform that secures our borders, includes a tough but fair path to citizenship, and ensures a strong economic future for our country. Congress’s inaction on immigration hurts our economy and our communities.

This week’s decision creates uncertainty and fear that hurts Arizona families and businesses. Now it's up to Congress to pass the DREAM Act. It's well past time; both parties must come together now to get it done.
