Student Testing Improvement and Accountability Act

Dear Friend,

To build a global workforce, we must ensure Arizona students have the skills and knowledge they need to fill the jobs of the future. Students should learn to think creatively and critically, but right now, one-size-fits-all standardized testing requirements too often stand in the way of success.

That’s why this week, we introduced the Student Testing Improvement and Accountability Act with Congressman Lee Zeldin (NY-01) to help schools focus on teaching and learning instead of excessive standardized testing.

Currently, K-12 students are required to take 17 standardized tests. Our legislation lowers that number to six – one reading and one math test in elementary, middle, and high school.

Students should be focused on mastering material, not memorizing content for a standardized test. Teachers often lose up to a month of teaching time to prepare students for standardized tests. Worse, these excessive federal testing requirements fail to deliver higher student achievement.

The Student Testing Improvement and Accountability Act empowers parents, teachers, and school districts to prioritize classroom instruction time, appropriately acknowledge individual learning styles, and ensure Arizona students have the skills they need to succeed.
